This post is a response to a Facebook post of a quote by Neil deGrasse Tyson about worms. Tyson's quote is:
The excerpt from DINKLE'S LIFE is:
“Wonderful
animals!” had said LPD. “Poke ‘em in the ear and they’ll knot up like a ball!
Leave ‘em alone for a few minutes, they’ll come out of it and you can poke ‘em
again, and they’ll knot up in a ball again!” Dinkle had laughed at the worms’
miseries until his eyes watered with tears. “If you’re a worm, Jimmy, then a
fat kid with a stick is a disaster, a hurricane, tornado, earthquake, terminal
schizophrenia; The Flood; Book of Revelation come to life!” He’d laughed,
coughed, dragged on his cigarette, shaking with the memories. “Named one of ‘em
Herman. Listen to this!” Then he had recited his ode to a flatworm:
Herman,
Herman, have a fit
You’re nothing
more than a dumb little shit
Don’t trust
Lonnie Paul you’ll never learn
That’s why
you’ll always be a worm
“Herman was
wallowing in fear, of course,” Dinkle had said, suddenly serious; “he was too
stupid to realize I wasn’t a catastrophe. He believed I was a force too
powerful for him to deal with.” He’d sucked heavily on the cigarette, then
filled the room with second hand smoke that responded only slightly to the
heavy black air outside the open window. “Even the worms got things to say to
you, Jimmy; even the worms.” Then he’d gotten all maudlin and sulky, until
Jimmy’d asked for more, and he’d perked up, telling about his dog Gismo, and
how stupid he appeared to be, unless you’d learned to talk to dogs. At the
time, Jimmy had wondered whether learning to talk to dogs was a prelude to
learning to talk to raccoons.
